Adventure Game Scene of the Day - Fri 5th January 2007

Time to revive the AGSotD tradition for this new year!

So I'm playing Uru at the moment (I'm just starting the Path of the Shell expansion). And I must say I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. I know I shouldn't: the gameplay if full of 3D pixel hunting, the puzzles more often than not suck (the treasure vault age and the twin desert/garden ages in the main game were especially horrendous; the other two were really good, though), and the whole thing is geared toward the saga's very small cult of hardcore fans, meaning most of the backstory (and Yeesha's meaningless prattle) makes no sense to me (despite having played all 5 Myst games and read two of the three novels*).

And still, I'm enjoying the game quite a lot. I'm going at my own pace and almost constantly relying on hints (without even a twinge of guilt, which is unusual for me), and, while I'm not sure why, I'm definitely having fun.

So I thought a picture from the Cleft (after Yeesha has performed her I've-spent-too-much-time-watching-Lynch's-horrendous-Dune-movie parlour trick) would make a fine scene for today. And it is a pretty picture, at least.

Yes, Uru was a bad game per se (what you said: stupid puzzles, stupid story, stupid interface), but I too enjoyed it much that I should have. Mainly because it's so beautiful, I guess.
I really liked the, erm, water age.

And Dune is a great movie (and it doesn't matter that I 'm the only one who thinks that).

The Bahro theme that was developing isn’t my favorite. Nonetheless, very nice memories and a big atmosphere with touches of realism that puts this game on the cusp of a truly immersive environment.

My love for adventure games actually started with the Uru, Ages Beyond Myst game. I didn't know anything about AG but I absolutely fell in love with the idea of looking for clues, visiting amazing places and solvig puzzles.
This picture you've chosen makes me all warm inside.

I really need to replay it a third time some day.

I must be playing this for the 6th or 7th time now, at least. Sometimes it's great just to play through a nice story. Kind of like watching a movie, only you are moving the character(s) and the driving the story forward. I guess I am the type of gamer who likes that type of gameplay. Okay, so maybe I overdid it a little with Myst/Uru, having played all the games and read all the novels. And even spent a few weeks learning to write in D'Ni (quite fun, actually!). This one (Path of the Shell) is one of my favorite games of all times. Like going for a long, long walk outside exploring, only not.. sort of.

In my opinion there is no question about it. It's absolutely worth the money. Spending so many hours in a so beautiful environment.. there is a whole world (actually much more than just one..) out there to explore. Fantastic experience! I can also recommend the soundtracks. They are wonderful to just listen to when you're not playing the game.

"Bad" game or "good" game, all that matters is that you're enjoying it. One reason why I've never really looked down on people that rely on walkthroughs, as long as they're having fun, who really cares?

Also, the Dune movie is great. I've actually been thinking about picking it up with a gift card I got for Christmas.

I so agree! The important thing is to have fun. Sometimes the fun lies in wrapping my brains around trying to beat the game and its puzzles and mysteries. Other times it's more about just playing the story.

By the way, which Dune movie are you referring to? The David Lynch one, or the other one (which is the better of the two in my opinion despite my being a fan of DL and (most) of his works)?

Good to see the scene of the day re start for 2007, i thought for sure someone would have done a 1st of January one but i guess everyone was hung over or something.

i'm guessing that is the old version of the new online game that is coming out? is anyone beta testing the new version?

The music in the Gallery is one of the most beautiful - if not the most beautiful- piece of music I've ever heard in a game.

I might also add for the completists (or cheapskates

) around here that the whole soundtrack is just a bunch of ogg files in the game's sfx subfolder (and they even have almost human-readable names; the gallery's music, for instance, is islmGalleryMusic_Loop.ogg).

And I definitely agree that the soundtrack is great.
