Wow, it's been ages since I owned Dune and also played it.
How is that pic so smooth looking, I mean the use of 2xSai effect or something similar, how?

But does that work on old pc games too?
I knew that for example ZSNES and Gens have implemented it.

It's implemented in DOSBox and ScummVM. And, actually, for both of those (and anything else using the SDL library) there exists an improved (less blurry, hardware accelerated, accepting arbitrary scaling factors) version called OpenGL-HQ.

Ooooh, that's cool. I have DOSBox, but I've never really used it because I've always thought that it's difficult to manage or something like that?

It's not that difficult. Between frontends, guides and a wiki, there's a lot of help available.
(we're getting slightly off-topic, though )

Oh yeah sorry about that. (directing this to ot...
)I think Dune is one of the very rare examples of good games that Cryo made. They made so many bad games...

I played the RTS Dune but I don't remember seeing an AG version. Did you play as Paul Atreides and follow the plot of the books or was it an entirely separate storyline?
If it was the first I always find that sort of game difficult to play because I've usually read the book to even think of playing the game so you know what's going to happen.

In the game the characters did look like the actors in Lynch's movie.
Like Paul Atreides looked just like Kyle Maclachlan or at least I remember it being that way. ![]()

Yes, it's a great game, exactly because of the atmosphere it creates. (The gameplay isn't all that impressive.) It follows the book only very generally, but it doesn't twist it into something unrecognizable like Dune II, and as a fan of Frank Herbert's novel I didn't find it at all difficult to enjoy.
There's a CD version that has spoken voices, clips from the movie, some updated background graphics and new travel sequences for the 'thopter and sandworm rides. It's worse in some respects, though (the title screen looks like a 12 year-old's CGI and Photoshop work), so I say get both editions! Paul, Jessica and Feyd are clearly based on Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis and Sting. Otherwise they use original designs for the characters (well, some of the Fremen looks suspiciously like various famous people). There's a non-playable, trailer-style demo that shows an earlier design of Paul, but I lost it years ago and have never been able to track it down again. ATMachine, this sounds like a job for you!

Great game, and the Stephane Brochu soundtrack masterpiece. As already said, one of the rare cases when Cryo did a good game. They tried the same with Ubik and Riverworld, and the results were quite far from this.

Last year I found the "Dune Spice Opera" cd in a second hand store. New, not opened. I gave it to a friend as a present for the sake of being a present, and he still does not find words to thank me for that. |
