Plea to Mods/Admin

Putting the Evidence hints in one thread is a pain, its hard to keep track of whats going on, with so many levels and stages everything is being mixed up.

How about a seperate section of the forum, and/or seperate threads. That way people wont get confused on whats going on.

The problem with separate threads is people post the same question about the same bits of the game over and over again, and it clutters up the forum. It happened with the previous game, Missing (aka In Memoriam), and that's why we put the threads for that game into one single thread. You can always use the search feature to find what you want in that single thread, rather than getting a horde of threads about the same thing as a result of a single search.

Sometimes people post without refering who they are talking to.

Which in turn can confuse others, since they dont know if they are talking to Person X or Person Y.

The one thread is going to be more clutered than individual threads, people just now are re-posting the same question for help which answers were given earlier in the thread.

So either single or multiple threads, its going to happen anyway

Just easier to find info related to what your seeking in multiple individual threads. Or end up with a 5000 page single thread

IMHO

EDIT: As a moderator's view, its easier to clean up individual threads than one big massive one. Especially if fights/flames occur.

You'd be right if people actually read the instructions on how to post new threads in the Hints forum. But most of them clearly don't, since at least half of the Evidence threads before merge had non-descriptive titles like "Evidence... please help". Thus, finding info would require actually reading them anyway, so I disagree that would be any easier than reading through one bigger thread.

Also, it's possible to search for individual posts.

About you last point, I must say I can't remember any flamewar happening in a Hints topic.

The main complaint seems to be posters who re-ask the already answered questions, though.

And, while the idea has merit anyway (it could be a list of solved problems instead, with links to appropriate posts), it's not an easy task to implement. How often to update the list to make sure people who skip the thread / don't use search button to begin with, see it? How to achieve a balance between the list being easily searchable and spoiler-free?

Of course, if DABhand or anybody active in that thread volunteers to maintain such list and see if it works, more power to them.

As Dale just witnessed someone asked about something already answered in the thread.

When the thread gets huge it will become more of a pain, most people wont use the Search function of a forum, they want answers jumping right at them.

Thats why individual threads on each puzzle area would have been easier to run.

It still doesn't remove the fact that people should be searching first.

Having a separate thread would not have stopped that person posting about that puzzle again, since they hadn't searched. It really isn't hard to run as it is now.

Having separate threads for different areas also relies on myself and the other mods having a greater knowledge of the game, and considering it hasn't even been released in the UK, I don't see how I'd be able to move threads into the right place effectively, if they were posted in the wrong area.

1. For the people who come to ask a question, it's exactly as easy to do a forum search first when there is only one thread as it would be if there were many of them. You have agreed about that.

2. For the people who help others, they can use the "View first unread" button to see only the newest requests. No need to keep track of all the past posts.

So we lose clarity (allowing several active threads with overlapping topics), and what do we gain?

True jackal ive been a moderator for several forums years ago, and I know how much of a pain it is.

But I would like to point out to Dale and AFG. Why are you repeating that people should use search, I kinda said that myself lol

I did say most people WONT use the search function of a forum, so there is no need to tell me they should be using it.

So that just reaffirms what we've been saying already. If they won't use the search, multiple threads makes it harder for us as moderators to manage, since we're not familiar with the game.
