Downtime. *sigh*

Apologies for the annoying and error-laden downtime this past hour or so. What should have been a routine upgrade from PHP 4.3.9 -> 4.3.10 completely broke the site. For some reason, 4.3.10 breaks the foreach() construct, and the site and forums rely heavily on that.

I downgraded back to 4.3.9 and all appears to be well. Let me know if you see any error messages around.

Sounds complicated. No problem though, yo. I'd ask you to explain what PHP number.number.number is, but I doubt whether I'd understand. I've got a brick in my head when it comes to understanding computer stuff.

In the grand scheme of things, this site appears to suffer from little downtime (ignoring the large amount of yesteryear). So I shouldn't worry about it

At least you're in control with the upgrades.

I shudder to think what could happen with my site when the hosting provider decides to jump to PHP 5 or something.

What about my provider, who hilariously
a) Moved perl
b) chmod'ed everything '000'
c) Deleted all .htpasswd files
[Edit] d) LOL - only just noticed this one - but they've deleted all my layout images as well!

All on different occasions and all without warning, of course! At least when AG screws up, we know who to blame!

Oh, and if it's any consolation, Penny Arcade was claiming that mysql_connect() isn't a valid PHP function last night. Much bigger sites have had similar fates befall them, I'm sure...

PS. While we're getting all techy - I like the fact you've enabled gzip for the forums! Does it save much bandwidth?

Once, my provider didn't count database traffic. Bwahahahaha! I used to store all my images in blobs!

But that was then... They got smarter.

I'll bet you PA upgraded or reinstalled PHP and forgot to include the php-mysql extension

PHP5 is a whole seperate impending problem for me. I fear upgrading, but sooner or later it's got to happen. At any rate, I'd rather wait until it's had more release time, since I'm still suspicious of weird hidden bugs or holes or something.

Woohoo! The good news is, 4.3.10 is up and running fine on our server now. Turns out that an outdated version of the Zend Optimizer was causing the PHP engine to do weird stuff (like ignoring foreach()). Updated the Optimizer from 2.5.3 to 2.5.7 and it all works happily. Yay!

Good thing, too, because 4.3.9 had a MAJOR security hole.

Hah, ironically enough my web host has the very same problem. Imagine my surprise when Googling for a solution brought up this page. :~

Well, I'd just mirror the whole site on my own webserver and try to mess it up there, first. That way you can take your time. The Adventure Developers site wasn't built on LFN's servers either.

Eh... I'm in no rush for PHP5. I'd rather let it mature a little anyway. Especially since 4.x is still actively maintained.
