Default letter requirement

Why does the forum require at least 3 characters to make a post? I mean, if all I want to do is respond to a post with a smiley or something, why does it make me put in two other characters as well? Can this be changed?

thanks,

Hmmm. I just typed in only two characters and it went through. Or did you mean something else?

Hehehe... <groan>

I overcome the three character requirement by just pressing the spacebar a few times. It's only mildly annoying to be reminded when I usually forget to do that.
