Yeah, the sound is somewhat similar, but it's not the same sound. Nintendo is wrong, though, the name isn't international at all. W is pronounced differently depending on language; Finnish doesn't even have the 'w' sound.

There's no W in Croatian alphabet either. X, Y and Q are also ommited, but it didn't stop Xbox and Playstation from becoming well recognised brands.

What about the Nintendo Woot?
I'd buy that. Seriously, if they wanted a short, snappy title for their console, they could have actually put some plosives in it. This console basically has gone from sounding cool, different and forceful to vaguely pathetic and juvenile.

After the initial first two weeks of toilet gags, the name will still be the same but the gags are gonna start to become stale.
Fact is, I'm more interested that big key developers are now taking the time to make Wii exclusives! From the way it sounds to me, the Wii is going to have hardly any ports whatsoever! This system is getting HUGE third party support. Already, it has more than the Cube ever had! The developers of Madden have actually taken the time to make the Wii version of the game totally seperate from the other next gen versions, so that it adapts to the controller...(and from the interview, it sounds like it's gonna be SWEET to play that this time around!). For the record - I HATE sport games with a passion, and have never touched a Madden game in my life. After reading the IGN interview - the Wii version could very well be the first time I delve into the franchise! It sounds awesome!! (Link for those interested -- http://revolution.ign.com/articles/703/703727p1.html)) Not to mention how SEGA, who 15 years ago were Nintendo's biggest rivals, now seem to be giving them a huge amount of their resources, and there are even rumors that a Sonic the Hedgehog EXCLUSIVE Wii title, could be in development. Who would have EVER thought that possible? All we have right now, is this name. It's clear there is a divide, some think it's okay, some like it, some dislike it, some hate it! To me at least, the very reasoning behind the name of the console, isn't childish, no matter if the way it sounds or the way it can be inferred, negates that! What is interesting is that this consoles name has actually made us think about it, more than any other title before it. That seems to sum up Nintendo's direction for this generation to me, perfectly.

Yes, it's good people are talking about it. I guess I should just avoid the gaming sites for a couple of days.
Not this one, though. ![]()

I was thinking about this, are they trying to pull an Apple marketting stunt, where everything is iSomething (iPod, iMac etc..)
But instead of being about I, it is about Wii And the whole console sure does look like apple's gadgets. What a lame name.

My German is bit rusty, but I think this dialogue might be correct:
Wii gehts? Schlecht. Wii so? Nintendo scheisse.

So far that's the only mockery of the Wii name that's actually funny.

It's a reference to a classic scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
