I'm not against it, but I don't like it.

I bought Half Life 2 and had a hell of a time getting to run via Steam (Proxy issues at my apartment) and re-installing was a pain in the ass. I ended up buying an additional pirate copy and dumped the original CDs.

Where I currently live and work, Thailand, its much cheaper to buy pirated backups than it is to download full game iso's. Thats just the way things work here. Also legitimate versions of games sell for around $10 USD on release but even then you have to put up with crap like Steam and Starforce

Nice kneejerk response without comprehension.

1) I bought legit copy of Half Life 2 on day of release.
2) I couldn't initially play through Steam due to proxy issues
3) Finally resolved issues and play through Steam
4) HDD crash and had to reinstall, have to unpack files again, have to register Steam again. Takes 3 hours from start to finish.
5) Bought pirated DVD for the inevitable day of Apocaplyse (due to my 'pirating' I guess) where Steam servers no longer exist but I can still play Half Life 2 and smash headcrabs with my trusty crowbar.

The first reviews are in. OXM UK gave it 10/10 and PC Gamer UK gave it 9.5/10. Pasting from another forum:

Quote:
(Taken from the OXM UK review)

The Plot is "24-Karat Gold, Amazingly written and beautifully constructed." Complete emotional roller coaster.

There is great dialogue.

The audio logs are very important for the story.

If you know exactly what you are doing and where you are going you can play through in about 8 hours. If you want to find everything explore the world, it could take about 24.

gameplay is tremendously well designed. Works as a level headed shooter.

7 weapons which have 3 types of ammo and can all be modded. Mods are visually represented.

Big Daddies are tough. "Even the most arrogant FPS player is going to be surprised by these big sods."

You never feel bored with the enemies you are facing.

The soundtrack is amazing.

BioShock is a novel compressed into a FPS

You will be playing this game for months to come.

The PCG review was indeed very positive. It pains me that there's still a month left until release...

Woohoo! Can't wait!

This is my most anticipated game since Deus Ex 2. And I'm not getting that sinking feeling as it nears release this time!

With a currency worth only a relatively small fraction of a dollar in certain countries, I'm not surprised piracy has gotten out of hand. Take a country like Sri Lanka for example. The rupee is only worth 1/100 of a dollar, but a game will still cost ~$60. For a lankese with a salary of 15000 rupees/month (which is a lot for that country) one doesn't need to think far to realize that buying legit games is a privilege left for the rich in a developing country. Now Thailand's bath isn't as weak as the rupee so I'm not saying that vivasawadee isn't doing anything wrong, only that I for one can understand why some people turn to piracy to be able to play games. Sorry for going off topic.

*edit*
Trying to get on topic again...
Anyone going to get the collector's edition. I can pre order one for ~€75 which I probably won't. Better get the regular, then I won't have to find space for that cumbersome box... hehe ;-)

I've managed to win a CE. Sadly it's coming from America, so I'll have to pay a hefty customs fee, but it should still end up cheaper than buying the game over here.

The CE actually looks nice for a change. The game, the obligatory "making of" DVD, a figurine and a soundtrack. More publishers should ask the fans what they want in their CEs.

Yeah, pre-ordered mine a while ago. About $90 Australian (~€55). Looking forward to the soundtrack (even though it's not by Eric Brosius).

Can't wait for the 24th. I've been on media blackout (including most of this thread) for about 6 months now.

And glad to hear you saved that Big Daddy, Robert

Nice! I was a little disappointed to see that the soundtrack CD is a mini-CD. I don't understand why they couldn't or won't just fill a whole CD with the music. Not like it saves THAT much cost, does it? That said, I'll probably try to get the Xbox collector's edition. It's only 10 dollars more expensive!

Bioshock is an expertly crafted game in every respect, a truly worthy successor to what's considered one of the PC's greatest game, and a game that, we feel, will be a milestone in PC gaming. Never has the medium been used as a storytelling device in such a beautiful and engaging way, and never have we been drawn so deeply into a gameworld.
(PCZone review). Boy, I'm glad that I still know next to nothing about that game.

Yeah I kinda feel like I've already heard and seen too much. The developer podcasts are really interesting to listen to but way spoiler-y... and the sheer amount of content on Gametrailers is getting a long way towards ridiculous.

See my sig. But really, there's so many "me, too" stuff out there, a game like this one sadly looks like one in a gazillion. So I've chosen not to let anybody spoil anything for myself this time. Not an easy task, what with us being in the age of interwebs and irrepressible trash talks, er information flows.

Demo due in a couple of hours? Not that I could ever run it, heh...

For anyone with an xbox360, there is now an official 1.35GB demo!
Apparently the servers are swamped ( surprise surprise)
I must say I couldn't even find where the demo download is at that place, not that I have an xbox. Probably gotta be registered to get it.

Nice of them to casually forget about PC owners ...

Not that it matters to me, since I don't have my own computer at the moment.
