Not as bad a game as some would have you believe, but certainly not the best MI game.

The art style had grown on me by Escape .

Pretty good game, but the worst of the series.

I will echo all the posts here. Pretty good, but behind the others.

I started playing Monkey Island 1 again last night.

"Where did you say those pirates leaders were again?"

Ah, yes... I've been thinking of replaying this for a while (it's the only Monkey Island I've got (for now) and it's among the first AGs I played).

I was quite enjoying it up to one particular puzzle (I'll give you a clue. The initials MK are involved) I must really get round to trying to get past that and completing it sometime.

Regardless of whether it was the worst MI or not, I still enjoyed it more than most adventure games released over the last five or six years.

I almost lost my faith in adventure games because of EMI.

Now I genuinely don't think it's that bad. A disappointment by the standards of LucasArts, but still about ten times better than anything I've played since ...

I was kidding.

But it was still a bad game in my opinion.

Why do so many people find it so bad? I thought it was fun! And M.K. was no more tiring as I.S. was at times.

Have you people who say it's better than anything you've played since replayed it? I remember thinking it was not that bad when I first completed it, but couldn't even bring myself to finish it when I started it again a few years later.

I didn't finish it, no. I've also not finished a replay of any other AG released since that time.

There are a number of problems with MK which makes it worse than IS in my opinion.

In IS, once Guybrush had heard a response you had a reasonable chance of picking it out by logic. No such luck wiht MK.

In IS you had some control over your learning process. You tried the insults you didn't know the answers to yet until you found a pirate that keew the response. In MK advancement is solely based on what move the monkey AI chooses to make.

IS was simple. Insult - Response. MK is complicated. You have to work out whcih positions are superiour and the word combinations to get to that superior position from all the other positions.

Finally, and this si the thing that really put me off MK. It happens too darn fast. In IS you paced it (an attack by you or the pirate only adbvanced when you picked an insult or response) so you could write down combinations if you needed to. The monkey moves whip out straight after yours and you have to write down their starting and ending positions how they changed and what position of yours they beat/lost to. It's too much in too little time.

A major disapointment. MK as we are calling it as well as the rock in the hole puzzles ruined a fair game.

Ha! I wouldn't go that far (yes, I know you were joking), although I remember being extremely dissapointed by it myself. And not because it was such a lousy game, but because it was such a lousy MI game. It's all relative. Had this been an original adventure, it wouldn't have been so bad, but as a MI game, it was extremely cheap, lazy and forgetful.
