While mod teams for first person shooters continue to acclain and column inches for turning the latest whizz-bang polygonal masterpiece into the last one, keen fans of adventure games work to push the genre in new directions. Thanks must go to the Crow's Nest and Adventure Gamers for their respective efforts to honour 2003's best independent adventure games. Both sites have awarded their top prize to the same game: Out of Order, created as a commercial release, but held back simply to showcase the SLUDGE engine.

Out of Order begins as Hurford, the main character wakes up from an extended nap to discover he and his bedroom have been transported to an alien world. From there it's a very British adventure game, in the mould of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

While we're on the subject of freeware advebtyre games, it's again worth pointing out the the excellent ScummVM, an emulator dedicated to running ancient adventure games on modern systems. The recent granting of freeware licenses for "Flight of the Amazon Queen" (pictured) and "Beneath a Steel Sky" means anyone with the emulator can now do a quick search for the origional code and dive straigt in. Best of all, our rite uncle, Charles Cecil has let it slip out that now Broken Sword 3 is out of the nxt door, he's already begun work on a new game, a sequel Beneath a Steel Sky.

And I wrote that out because it was my friends magazine and at the time i didn't have acess to a scanner. 6 minutes that took.

Do you think there'll come the day when the PC Gamer forum people will make topics about their name appearing in Adventure Gamers? And post scans, articles, and what not?

I wish I could get PC Gamer UK over here. I finally cancelled my subscription to the US magazine as their coverage of adventures just became more and more embarrassing. Their Post Mortem review was an all-time low; basically the reviewer criticized the game for not being more of a survival horror.

I'm positive PC Gamer US wouldn't even know what to do with a game like Out of Order. They'd scratch their heads, make funny noises, and just go back to playing Battlefield Vietnam.

But I digress. Angrily.

I wrote to PC Zone (another British PC gaming mag) a year or so back regarding amateur adventures. You can read it here. They never did do any coverage of amateur games, but they did do a feature on commercial adventures a few months later featuring Randy Sluganski (dunno if I spelled his name correctly...).

As Evan said, you people in Britain are so lucky to have computer game magazines which show interest in adventure games and don't automatically label them as "outdated crap" or some such.

I'm so jealous. I hate you all.

PC Gamer UK may have featured that little snippet of info on adventure games, but, in my experience, when it comes to adventure games, they're not much better than PC Gamer US. Both have still a lot to learn...
