Suggestion: Developer list and dictionary

I'd like it possible to browse developers and publishers as well as game titles.

Newcomers might appreciate a way to look up common abbreviations/acronyms (DOTT, BASS, BS2, GK3, TLJ, ROTS, MOS ... ) and writers/desigers (Ron Gilbert, Jane Jensen ... ) often mentioned in these forums.

I had a list of commonly used acronyms in our FAQ originally but the rest of the staff thought it was out of place there. So I blame them.

Well, I think it would be very much in place with such a list in your FAQ. Apart from asking, I don't know of an easy way to find out what titles these (not always obvious) acronyms stand for.

A list like that is only helpful if it's comprehensive, and the list in the FAQ was not comprehensive.

If a game's common abbreviation was added to the Notes field in the game database, then the game would come up if you did a search for the abbreviation...

Okay, maybe "only helpful" was a little too strong of a phrase.

But my concern was that the list would have to be continuously updated and there's always going to be a game or an acronym that we forgot.

Thats pretty fuzzy logic, i mean better not have a Review section of Adventure Gamers, cause you have to continuosuly update it , and there are games that you might omit. Minimal info on Acronyms is better than none.

Hey now, I just said it shouldn't be in the MIDDLE of the FAQ.

Who wants to scroll through a giant list to find other answers? A link or at the end would work.

I disagree. Take, for example, the list in the old FAQ:

This is by no means a comprehensive list. It includes some old games but not others, for no obvious reason. And it's worthless to someone who wants to find out what TMOS (also known as MoS) or L: DS or S&M2 stands for. And yeah, the list could be redone right at this moment to include EVERY acronym for EVERY game that's come out to date... but it'll be outdated again a few months from now, and therefore worthless to the person who can't figure out what XYZ stands for.

Acronyms are always based on the first letters of the words in the game title, and usually can be figured out pretty easily from the context of the post. If someone can't figure out what an acronym means, I'd personally rather that person ask than to have AG try to maintain a comprehensive list of acronyms.

Reviews are completely different, IMO, but hey, if people would rather AG staff spent their time trying to maintain long lists of acronyms rather than reviewing games, who am I to argue?

Well that's ok, but I am NOT taking the "T" ones again...Fovily kept saying all the games had at least an implied "The" in the front and I had to work all night

For the record, I believe a comprehensive list of acronyms is a much needed feature, being in the FAQ, main site, or wherever.
And if you don't want to have to bother thinking about it (and waste time), why not start a thread where people would post game and their acronyms whenever they think of them?

I'm getting tired of typing Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis instead of FoA.

Good idea, although I feel that the list of known figures in the adventure genre is perhaps more important than an acronym database. Or that's my opinion anyway... which never accounts for much.

Seeing how much we use acronyms in the forums, I'd say both would be as important here. As for the main site, though, I agree with you.
